I received a digital* advance review copy of Great British Journeys by Richard Madden via NetGalley, and published by National Trust books. Overall I really enjoyed the various virtual journeys throughout the book that span all four nations of the UK (yes, even Northern Ireland).
As someone who love to travel, whether that’s a road trip through winding country lanes or a train across the country to visit family, there was a good mix of routes/destinations I was familiar with and also new to me. I found it really inspiring and honestly if we hadn’t had family staying with us over the Easter weekend I finished reading this, I would’ve hopped in the car to try out the Dorset based route along the south coast.

I was particularly intrigued by some of the water based routes as someone who enjoys a boat ride but has no experience navigating themselves – maybe one day I will end up on the Norfolk Broads!
Alongside general route information there is a good amount of technical information regarding locks or walking terrain coupled with interesting facts and historical titbits about the surrounding areas and views.
The book contains a good amount of photos to whet the whistle, but sadly no maps but I’d still recommend it to anyone interested in travelling around the UK, whether native or tourist.
4.5/5
*digital arc formatting can differ to the finished product, especially for books that are only released as physical copies so I try to avoid comments on what I perceive as formatting issues, its also the reason why my book photo may be of a kindle screen!
