Gild by Raven Kennedy
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is a revised review, I think in the end 3.5 stars would be appropriate. Initially I seemed to like the book, then reflecting on it couldn’t think of anything particularly that I liked and ended with “less than a month on I can’t remember anything that made me want to continue with the series”. However, I kept on seeing a lot of posts on social media about how the series gets better and I felt I needed to take that into consideration especially as several other book series that I love also fall into this trap, whereby the series gets a lot better as the author grows – and as someone who often tells others to push past the first book of these series it would be hypocritical not to take my own advice, non? So push on I did, via my newly discovered Libby app for my local library and this series is now one of my all time favourites! I’ve left some of the remains of my original review for posterity and because I still stand by original thoughts, but if you’re wondering about this series (The Plated Prisoner) its definitely worth taking a punt past book one. Also this series is firmly adult fantasy and if like me you found it in the YA section of your local charity shop you should probably let them know their folly
Interesting concept – taking someone and their story from mythology and giving it new life, however something about this retelling didn’t gel with me. I finished it and it was a decent story, but I don’t know if I care about the characters enough to go on. I felt like the last 20% of the book was the best part, which was a lot less sex focused and story driven – a lot of the book felt like it was for shock value rather than plot development.
